Of Imagination and Memories II.iii

Sophie Kerr Portfolio
II: Self-Portrait as Wind

6 January 2010

I used to wonder at your turns of phrase
when we whispered secrets under the stairs.
I smiled at each inscrutable present of words
until: ‘…Please, forget it. Let’s pretend
I didn’t just turn everything upside down.’

I was catching snow faeries on my tongue
when you stopped by on Wednesday.
You were leaning on the frosted fence,
watching my silly dance in silence.
Still not a word when I noticed you,

just reached into your pocket
and pulled out a crumpled letter.
I didn’t take it, so you put it back
and walked up the street to your house.
Your coat was black, but turning white,
fading into the swirling storm.
