Thoughts and Images

A few thoughts or observations regarding Cork:

The Lee is a large, powerful river and yet it is confined between old stone walls that keep it tame. I have never seen a river so powerful so subdued.

The Irish have a tendency to pronounce "th" as just "t", but may replace "d" with the "th" sound as in "murther" (murder).

There is a Singer sewing machine store about a 10 minutes' walk from the apartment.

Bright colours and the pre-teen goth look are not unpopular. I think they are on the cutting edge of 90s fashion.

Soaps run with great regularity during the day and into the evening and may be viewed at restaurants/pubs. There is one in Irish.

There are four channels on the television (one of which is in Irish). Between them, you can watch anything from football (soccer) to a soap opera to a documentary on the New Grange to CSI New York to game shows to the Irish news cast.

Women wear heels if they have even the smallest modicum of fashion sense and very high heels if they are really on top of things.

A misty rain is just as capable of soaking you as a downpour given a long enough walk.

It may rain, even downpour while sunny.

Penny's has no relation to J.C. Penny's other than the sale of clothing. Penny's has good prices.

Butcher shops sell meat from their own farm and will happily tell you how to prepare the meat you buy.

It is almost always rush hour and there are usually a lot of people walking on the main streets.

Gardens, houses, cars, pubs, and laundry machines (they wash and dry after at least two and a half hours) are small.

The Irish think pretzels are weird.

An elderly gentleman we met at lunch in a pub informed us that "Half the Irish are nuts and the other half are crazy." He also said, "Hollywood has given us Irish a bad name, you know, they always show us fightin' and drinkin', but it isn't like that at all! We've given up the fightin'!" He said he had visited every state in the U.S.A. and quite liked our country, even if he did have his criticisms of the government (don't we all).
